Kossuth Colony Historic District Dayton Ohio

The Kossuth Colony Historic District is a neighborhood of Dayton Ohio. It is located within the boundaries of Baltimore Street, Mac Avenue, and Notre Dame Avenue. This area of the city of Dayton has been recognized as a place on the National Register of Historic Places since December 21, 1979. This is the only one of 18 historic districts in the city of Dayton northeast of the downtown area.

The History of this Historic District

Kossuth Colony Historic District is named after Lejos Kossuth and was constructed in 1906 with the original intent to be a home for Hungarian immigrant workers employed at the Barney and Smith Car Company. Barney and Smith manufactured rail cars and it was ranked among Dayton's largest and most successful companies.

This colony, or collection of homes, stands today with much of the original architecture that it had when it was originally built. It is almost like a piece of the city of Dayton where time has stood still. There are 40 historic houses that make up the original colony. Houses feature simple gable front homes.

In 1905 the Barney and Smith car company found themselves in a shortage of laborers and recruited immigrants from Hungary to help fill the workforce. The company built 40 double houses for their new workforce to rent. There is also a clubhouse where workers were required to shop for all of their food and clothing. This clubhouse also served as the colony's post office and a place to receive all incoming packages. All packages sent to workers were inspected through the clubhouse post office to ensure that no items were sent that could be purchased from the company store.

One of the most notable features of the colony was the 12 foot high fence around the perimeter, it attracted many visitors to come and see for themselves the strange fenced-in settlement.

The colony only housed workers for the car company for a short time due to a flood that occurred in 1913. At the time of the flood, several sections of the fencing were destroyed and the Barney and Smith Car Company needed to close for a period of time. This led to several Hungarian immigrants finding other work in the area.
