History of the town of Miamisburg Ohio

This area was first settled by European Americans and the first name for the area was Hole's Station around the year 1797. This was due to Zachariah Hole settling in the area with his family from Virginia and building a stockade on the West Bank of the Miami River which was opposite the mouth of Bear Creek. This stockade attracted squatters and surveying parties as well as other settlers who had grants to live in the local cabins until they could build their own home. This is where the name Hole's Station originated. Many settlers traveled west away from Pennsylvania to live in the area. By 1822 the area had become a village and achieved official city status in the 1920s.

Miamisburg was the site of one of the first postwar United States atomic energy commission facilities in 1947. During this time the greater Dayton area was large support for several secret operations controlled by the War Department during World War II. When the war ended most of these operations in the area moved into the Miamisburg Mound Laboratory operated by the Monsanto Chemical Company. This laboratory had the job of monitoring all aspects of the US nuclear defense stockpile. The work that was produced from the Mound Plant was very classified and the plant had a small army of security guards. In May 1993 the US Department of energy made a decision to stop production at the Mound. In 1996 cleanup of all radioactive and hazardous waste was the majority of activity at the Mound Plant.
