The Old North Neighborhood of Dayton Ohio

Old North is a neighborhood of the city of Dayton Ohio just northeast of the downtown center of Dayton. It is roughly bounded or nestled in between both the Great Miami River and the Mad River. The Great Miami River creates the north boundary of the neighborhood and the Mad River creates the south boundary. The west boundary is roughly at Kaiser Street and to the northeast is the Avondale neighborhood. The Kossuth Colony Historic District is included within these boundaries on the southwest end of this neighborhood.

The population of the Old North neighborhood is roughly 5,945 people. This area has a dense suburban feel and there are many up-and-coming businesses in the area as well as several popular local restaurants and coffee shops. The median home value is $54,222 and the median rent price is $768. The majority of residents in Old North rent their homes.

The website niche.com ranks the old North neighborhood as number 10 out of 55 for neighborhoods with the lowest cost of living in Dayton. It is also ranked number 12 out of 55 on the list of best neighborhoods for young professionals in Dayton.

History of the Old North Neighborhood in Dayton

The first people to settle into the old north area just northeast of downtown Dayton were German immigrants. At that time the area was called Texas or Parma. Around the turn of the 20th century, more people came to the area including immigrants from central Europe mostly from the areas of Poland, Hungary, Lithuania, and Germany. Many of these immigrants became laborers in Dayton area factories and began a rich ethnic culture in the neighborhood. There were many cultural festivals held as well as social clubs. Today there are still many Roman Catholic churches that started during these first days. The central European specialty restaurant Amber Rose is also a popular almost landmark that began due to the early immigrants of the area.

Today many people love the area for its location nestled between the rivers, its affordable homes, and the rich culture that still permeates the area as well as great community pride. There are many new local businesses that have started over the last five years or so in the neighborhood that bring a sense of community and belonging to the area as well.
