Going back to 1810, Dayton began as a small community with a population of just 383 along the banks of the Great Miami River. Daniel C. Cooper a resident of Dayton began making plans to develop land east of downtown which is where the Oregon District is as early as 1815. In 1829 the first plat was recorded and then developed. It became an area for prominent businessmen that decided to make a home east of the downtown core of the city. Today the original buildings and homes still stand.
