History of South Park Historic District

South Park encompasses 24 blocks at the south boundary of the Oregon Historic District and north of the University of Dayton. The earliest days are attributed to John H Patterson who founded the National Cash Register Company. Patterson built a factory on South Main Street and at that time South Park was home to a collection of modest homes referred to as shacks and shanties that earned the name "Slidertown".

Youthful boys living in Slidertown gave Patterson trouble at his factory breaking the windows. This led Patterson to offer these boys something more productive and positive to do with their time. Patterson sponsored several community beautification projects including gardens to breathe some life into the area. With time South Park became a desirable neighborhood where many of Patterson's factory workers and supervisors lived. Many company celebrations and functions took place on Park Drive Boulevard. The Neighborhood was centered around the factory, its operations, and its workers until the invention of the automobile which allowed workers to live a greater distance from work.

Today many of the ornate historic buildings of that time still stand. You can take in the beauty of Queen Anne, Federal and Romanesque, Second Empire, and High Victorian Italianate architectural styles.

Real Estate in the South Park Historic District

The South Park Historic District offers a great variety of homes. A Dayton homebuyer can find both single-family and multi-family properties in a wide range of ages and architectural styles. The most popular properties in the largest historic district in the city of course are the historic single-family homes. There are some nicely kept impressive single-family homes with ornate historic architecture, the most recognizable may be the Victorian homes with large yards and immaculately kept gardens. These homes transport you to the high-end suburban neighborhoods of your favorite classic Americana movies. Though these properties are some of the most visually impressive and unique in Dayton they come at a very affordable price range as compared to many homes in central Ohio.
